Travelers at Jacksonville International Airport will soon have a couple of new eating options within the building’s concourse – including a local favorite.
Local gourmet coffee shop Southern Grounds announced today that it will be opening in Concourse A at the airport later this year. In addition, BurgerFi will be joining the airport in the newly-rebuilt Concourse B once it re-opens in 2022.
The Southern Grounds location will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with snacks and bakery items in addition to its popular gourmet coffee and teas, and it will also feature dedicated seating. Its menu items will include artisan sandwiches, salads, and tartines with multiple gluten-free and vegetarian items offered.
“Coffee remains one of the most popular products amongst our passengers in the airport,” Jacksonville Aviation Authority CEO Mark VanLoh said. “With Southern Grounds presence in the terminal, travelers will have a fresh gourmet coffee shop experience from a local favorite.”
The addition of Southern Grounds and BurgerFi to the airport’s food offerings comes as a result of its new 10-year, $60 million contract with HMSHost. The global restaurateur manages dining options for over 120 airports worldwide.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Jacksonville Aviation Authority to bring local businesses into the airport, especially one like Southern Grounds that has deep local roots and delivers a beloved community gathering place into the concourse,” said HMSHost Vice President of Business Development Stephen Douglas. “With the upcoming opening, we’re sending travelers off with one last bite and sip of a hometown favorite.”
The airport space is one of two Southern Grounds locations being developed – the eatery is also working on a location in Avondale. It has two existing locations: one in Neptune Beach and one in San Marco.
“Traditionally, being in transit has been the least enjoyable part of travel. With our partnership with HMSHost & JAA we aim to change that with a sense of community, great cup of coffee, and a relaxing customer centric atmosphere,” said Southern Grounds owner Mark Janasik. “We are very grateful to JAA, Lee Wesley Group and HMSHost for selecting our brand for this exciting opportunity.”
The location in Concourse A is expected to open this fall.
