The JCA, in addition to being one of Jacksonville’s top community centers, has always managed to bring in an interesting collection of talent for their yearly festivals.

This year will be no exception as the agency kicks off its Discover Culture – Jewish Literary, Film and Art Festival in November.

The festival starts off with a bang, as comedy writer Alan Zweibel drops by at 7 PM on November 2 to discuss his book, For This We Left Egypt? Zweibel was a long-time writer for NBC’s Saturday Night Live, and also co-created the Showtime cult classic It’s Garry Shandling’s Show.

Zweibel will be joined by special guest and co-author Dave Barry. Barry is also a noted comedic author, and for over 20 years he had a weekly nationally syndicated column in the Miami Herald.

Some other highlights from the literary side of the festival include appearances by actress and author Annabelle Gurwitch, who’s fresh off of a guest appearance on FX’s Better Things, and historian and author Steven J. Ross whose fascinating book Hitler in Los Angeles tells of the foiled Nazi plot to invade and destroy Hollywood during World War II.

In addition to author appearances, there will be screenings of the films Above and Beyond and The Pickle Recipe, a family puppet show, and a Broadway cabaret featuring tunes crafted by Jewish composers.
