Check out the latest Jacksonville development and construction news in this week’s edition of Building Up Jax!
Brewpub set for 9th and Main
The 9th and Main building’s future tenant has been announced.
Strings Sports Brewery will be opening in the historic Springfield spot, according to the new brewpub’s Facebook page.
The project, led by restaurateur Scott Adeeb, has been in the works for about a year now, but as of this week it’s been approved by city council and will move forward. No word yet on if there will still be a Bono’s BBQ location here as well.
The building has been sitting vacant for nearly a decade.
HOBNOB cuts back hours
We’ve got some bad news for those still holding out hope that Unity Plaza will take off.
This past week, HOBNOB announced that it was planning on switching up its menu and also will now only be open from Thursday to Sunday. Monday through Wednesday, the dining room will be closed but can be rented out for private events.
The owner, Ellen Cottrill, indicated that the lack of traffic to Unity Plaza was a direct factor in the decision.
The announcement from HOBNOB comes just short of a year after fellow Unity Plaza eatery Sbraga & Co. shut down overnight. That spot still sits vacant – and largely unchanged, with dining tables still visible and Sbraga signage still out front.
Biggie’s Pizza in Five Points!
Five Points won’t be without a pizza joint for long.
Jax Beach favorite Biggie’s Pizza will be opening a new location in Five Points soon.
It’ll be taking over the spot formerly occupied by Kostas Pizza Italian, which closed after 41 years of business earlier this month.
Aetna out at Eight Forty-One
Say goodbye to the Aetna signage on 841 Prudential Dr.
According to Jax Daily Record, the company’s move from 841 Prudential Dr. on the Southbank will be completed by July 7.
As previously reported, Aetna is moving to Grammercy Woods by The Avenues on Southside Blvd. One Call Care Management will then take over Aetna’s place inside the building – as well as adding its signage where Aetna’s currently sits.
Aetna will have until August to take down their signage.
Noted projects
- An as-of-yet unnamed wood-fired pizza joint will be coming soon to Springfield – we’ll have updates once we know more.
- There was a rumor going around on social media this week that Whataburger would be closing all of its locations. Good news for Whataburger fans though: the report is NOT true, and seems to have just been a prank from a fake news site.
- The Local, a new restaurant from Roost Restaurants located at 4578 San Jose Blvd., will hold its grand opening this Wednesday after a soft opening this past week.
