REVIEW: The Happy Grilled Cheese

The Happy Grilled Cheese, Jacksonville, FL

Since 2013, The Happy Grilled Cheese has been serving up delicious grilled cheese sandwiches all around Jacksonville from their original food truck.

Two years ago, the mobile eatery opened its long-awaited brick-and-mortar location on Hogan Street downtown.

The spot is small, which isn’t ideal during the lunch rush. We ended up taking our order out to Hemming Park. But it’s nicely decked-out in giant, bright-orange splashes, much like its food truck’s wrap.

The restaurant’s menu is surprisingly extensive, with over a dozen sandwich options as well as several salads.

We tried the All-American Melt – three cheeses, bacon, and tomato – and the OMG Melt, an intense combo of three cheeses, mac and cheese, bacon, pieces of mozzarella sticks, and tomato soup drizzle.

The OMG Melt is perfect for true cheese lovers. It’s probably not possible to pile more different kinds of cheese into one sandwich, and the drizzle of tomato bisque adds just the right hint of sweetness.

Side options include French fries, mac and cheese, and pasta salad among others. We tried the pasta salad and the fries; the pasta salad was good, and the fries were decent.

The food didn’t take long to come out considering the sudden lunch rush. And while there wasn’t any seating left in the restaurant, sitting outside at Hemming Park was just as enjoyable.

If you love cheese and you haven’t made it to The Happy Grilled Cheese’s brick-and-mortar location yet, you’re doing yourself a major disservice.
