Taverna Gives Back to First Responders with “Meals for Medical Workers”

With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging on, many are eager to give back to the local medical workers and first responders who are helping to keep Jacksonville healthy.

Local restauranteurs Sam and Kiley Efron, owners of popular local eatery Taverna San Marco, are doing just that with their “Meals for Medical Workers” initiative.

The husband-and-wife team launched their initiative in early September in partnership with Baptist Health, raising funds to provide hand-crafted meals to local medical workers and first responders. One meal is donated for every $10 raised.

Taverna recently delivered its first round of meals – 140 of them, to be exact – this past Saturday to staff members at Baptist Health. The $1,400 for those meals was raised with the help of the northern St. Johns County-based Creeks Baseball Club Riverhawks; representatives from both Taverna and the Riverhawks completed the delivery.

The restaurant, which opened within San Marco Square in 2009, hopes to do another delivery to Baptist staff sometime before Christmas and to keep the initiative going for as long as it’s needed. They’ve set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the ongoing project.
