REVIEW: Mojo Bar-B-Que

For over 15 years, Mojo Bar-B-Que has been serving up delicious Southern BBQ cuisine for local residents.

Over the years, the restaurant has expanded to four Jax-area locations, but it all started at the first spot at 1607 West University Boulevard.

The Lakewood-area spot is decked out in blues-themed décor, including several posters for the local Springing the Blues music festival. It’s a decent-sized location – smaller than most of the chain’s other spaces but featuring plenty of seating without feeling cramped.

The menu is typical of any good barbecue joint: there’s smoked brisket, pork, turkey, and chicken available as a platter or in sandwich form, along with a few salads and designated specials. Side options include similarly standard fare such as mac and cheese, fries, collard greens, and more.

Sauce options include Sweet, Mustard, Vinegar, Chipotle, and the house-special Mojo.

While the original location doesn’t have a bar, it does serve a rotating selection of local craft beers along with standard domestic options.

Service is quick and friendly, though the kitchen does slow down a bit around the lunch rush.

We tried out Mojo’s smoked chicken nachos appetizer plate – a combo of pulled chicken, Mojo BBQ sauce, cheddar jack cheese and jalapenos – as well as a smoked chicken sandwich, both of which were fantastic and sure to be appreciated by any local BBQ lover.

If you’re in the mood for a nice barbecue-centric lunch, Mojo Bar-B-Que is one of the best local options you’ll find.
