We Were Wrong About Daily’s Place

Like most other Jax residents, we were super excited when we found out about Daily’s Place, the massive flex field and amphitheater project adjacent to EverBank Field and the soon-to-be-redeveloped Shipyards property.

When the initial concert lineup for the venue was announced, though, we were a little discouraged.

Now, as the venue approaches its opening weekend, we’re happy to admit that we spoke way too soon.

Initially, we were concerned by the focus on older bands and less relevant artists that appeared to be an issue in the first round of show announcements. The list was headlined by acts like Chicago, the Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, and others that simply didn’t excite us.

Beyond that, there appeared to be very little diversity. Almost all of the announced acts were rock or country artists – not necessarily surprising for a city that played a big role in the launch of Southern rock, but disappointing for a city that’s becoming increasingly multi-cultural.

However, since that initial list was released, several additional shows have been announced that seem to correct the genre and diversity gaps.

The venue is branching out into the hip-hop world with performances by R&B star Mary J. Blige (August 23) and rappers Meek Mill and Yo Gotti (July 22).

Legendary singer Diana Ross will also come to Daily’s Place this year with a show on June 28.

They’ve also added a few more solid acts that are still consistent with the original theme of rock and country: Kings of Leon, Lady Antebellum and Matchbox Twenty are just a few of the additions.

The venue is even beginning to branch out beyond music. It’ll feature Dan TDM, a YouTube gamer from the UK with a live interactive show, on June 30.

As the venue opens, there are sure to be more shows announced. So far, though, it looks like the planning team behind Daily’s Place has really stepped up in regards to making the new venue a place for everyone to enjoy.

We’re excited for the grand opening of Daily’s Place – and we’ve never been happier to admit that we were wrong.
