#904WKND: Jazz Fest, Daily’s Place, and Memorial Day

#904WKND is your weekly, curated guide to the most interesting things going on in Jacksonville this weekend.

Here are our picks for Memorial Day Weekend!

Jacksonville Jazz Fest

We may be a little biased on this one, as the Jacksonville Jazz Fest is one of our staff’s favorite yearly event. It brings some of the country’s best jazz-inspired acts into the heart of downtown – this year, headlining acts include The Commodores, Gregory Porter, Lalah Hathaway and more.

The festival features three outdoor stages, with the main stage set up in the Farah & Farah employee parking lot at Main and Adams.

And of course, with Jazz Fest comes Jazz Fest After Dark. On Friday and Saturday night, downtown’s premier venues will play host to a collection of over 40 acts.

There will, of course, be food trucks and drink stations set up around all of the stages.

The event is entirely free, but does offer VIP packages available for purchase at the official Jazz Fest pop-up store. To accommodate travel to and from the festival stages, the Skyway will operate until 1:30 AM on Friday and Saturday nights, and until 12:30 AM on Sunday night.

Daily’s Place Grand Opening

They pulled it off!

For weeks, the question has been floated as to whether or not the construction of Daily’s Place, the massive new amphitheater and flex-field attached to EverBank Field, would be completed in time for its planned Memorial Day Weekend launch.

As it turns out, they nailed it. The amphitheater is complete and ready to go, having passed city inspections yesterday. And on Saturday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band will be joined by special guest Jon Cleary for the very first show at the new venue.

On Sunday night, Train and O.A.R. will perform the venue’s second show.

For anyone attending these shows, it’ll be a surreal experience to witness the first concerts in our city’s brand new amphitheater.

It’s hard to be the biggest event in town during the same weekend as Jazz Fest, but the launch of Daily’s Place certainly does come close.

Memorial Day Ceremony

While Memorial Day is one of the most fun weekends of the year, signalling the unofficial beginning of summer, it’s important to remember why the holiday exists in the first place.

On Monday morning at 9 AM, Mayor Lenny Curry will lead a ceremony at Veteran’s Memorial Wall to honor Jacksonville’s fallen veterans. The ceremony will be preceded by a musical performance by Navy Band Southeast.

There’ll be free parking available in the lot between the arena and EverBank Field.

The city recommends “patriotic attire”, so don your stars and stripes and come honor the city’s veterans!
