REVIEW: Brixx Wood Fired Pizza

Last week, Brixx Wood Fired Pizza opened up on the retail level of 220 Riverside, joining Sbraga & Company and HOBNOB.

Brixx is a chain restaurant with several locations throughout the east coast, but this is its first location in Jacksonville — and Florida in general.

We decided to try out Brixx last week after its opening to see how well it fits into the ever-growing Brooklyn neighborhood.

The location is fantastic, and ideal for any restaurant with reasonable prices. The residents of 220 Riverside, and the nearby The Brooklyn complex, provide a built-in fan base assuming the food and prices are good. It currently stands out as the closest pizza option for Brooklyn residents. It’s also by far the cheapest of the three options now overlooking Unity Plaza. Nearby Brooklyn Station has several other food options, but none that directly compete with Brixx’s menu offerings.

Service was pretty slow when we visited, especially given the lack of a crowd. It seemed like the staff was still working on getting in the groove — understandable given that it was their first week. The sparse crowd surprisingly seemed to skew a little older than expected, drawing a few families as well.

The menu offers a nice selection of 10-inch pizzas, as well as sandwiches and a few pasta entree options. The beer menu is extensive as well, with employees’ shirts boasting about their 24 taps. For beer connoisseurs, the chain offers a rewards program for trying their selection each time you come in, allowing you to earn free pizza, a T-shirt, a beer goblet, and even a $75 gift card.

The food was delicious. We recommend the chicken florentine pizza, but everything we saw around us also looked great.

Assuming the staff hiccups are worked out quickly, Brixx figures to dominate the pizza market in the Brooklyn area, and to be a popular destination for the area’s residents.
