Building Up Jax, 10/15: Updates from the Landing and SJTC

This week, we have updates from the Jacksonville Landing, the St. Johns Town Center area, Springfield, and more in Building Up Jax.

Paint and drink at the Landing

We’ll start this week with something that’s always a (very welcomed) shock: the Landing is getting a new tenant.

The Paint Bar, a paint-and-drink venue along the lines of Painting with a Twist, will open soon in the Landing’s main shopping corridor. It will occupy a space at the very end of the corridor.

The Paint Bar is marketing itself as “fun for all ages” – it will do kids’ birthday parties in addition to the adult paint-and-drink parties. The venue will provide wine for customers, but will also allow you to bring your own drinks.

The venue will join a limited but slowly regrowing collection of retailers at the Landing, headlined by longtime tenant Sports Mania. Many storefronts still remain empty, but any step in the right direction is a welcomed sight.

Town Center updates

The St. Johns Town Center is trying out a partnership with Jax Food Truck Food Court that will bring a food truck pavilion to the space across from Dick’s Sporting Goods next to Dillard’s. It will be “open” Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays around lunch time and will feature selections from Jax Food Truck Food Court’s lineup.

Topgolf will open its doors at the St. Johns Town Center by the end of the month.

Show up for Springfield hearing!

This week, the Main and Six Brewery project in Springfield will go before the Land Use Zoning committee – again.

Last time, an outpouring of public support led to the project passing through the committee meeting quite easily. Unfortunately, the result of the hearing was vacated due to an error in the way nearby schools and churches were informed of the pending development.

Now, a second hearing will be held, and just as much public support is needed. Local religious leaders are attempting to claim moral high-ground by fighting the development – they’ve done so unsuccessfully with other brewery projects in other areas of the city.

If you’d like to show your support for the project, or your opposition to special interest groups trying to sabotage local business, be sure to show up to the hearing. It will be held this Tuesday, October 18, at 5:30 PM at City Hall. Come out and show your support!

Your Pie expanding

Your Pie is looking to expand within the Jacksonville area.

According to Jacksonville Business Journal, the chain will soon open a third area location at 13423 Beach Blvd., and it’s looking to gradually expand to as many as 12 locations around the First Coast.

It currently has locations in Fleming Island and Touchton Park. The chain focuses on the build-your-own-pizza trend, along the same lines as Blaze Pizza.

Matthew’s impact

A whole lot of private residential permits were issued this week for roofing repairs – likely a direct result of Hurricane Matthew’s impact. Well over 20,000 insurance claims have been filed in Jacksonville since the storm.

Noted projects

  • First Coast Mohs Dermatology will begin construction on its new office building at 600 Park St., right next door to Jimmy Johns.
  • Jax Beach-based Engine 15‘s tap room on Myrtle Ave. near Beaver St. is now open.
  • Bold Bean‘s San Marco location along Hendricks Avenue is getting closer to opening, with signage now up on the exterior of the building.
