This week, there’s big news for Springfield residents: the battle over the Main and Six Brewing Co. project is officially over, and the residents (and the brewery) won. That and a few other notes in this week’s Building Up Jax.

Main and Six wins approval

Extremely exciting news this week: the proposed Main and Six Brewing Co. project in Springfield received approval from city council.

The long saga began due to questionable zoning laws that requires any establishment serving alcohol to receive city approval to open within 1,500 feet of a church or school.

In the case of the Springfield project, there were quite a few churches and schools within that range, and the applicants ended up missing a few in the original round of notification.

That prompted a second hearing before the Land Use & Zoning committee. The lengthy hearing ended in approval from the committee, with the only residents voicing opposition doing so on religious grounds.

A city council vote was the last barrier to cross for the project to be fully approved. The final vote was 15-3 in favor of the project. One of the three opposing voters, Doyle Carter, also voted in opposition to the project during the LUZ committee hearing.

The brewery, once completed, should provide a nice spark to the Main Street corridor in Springfield.

Noted projects

Volcano Sushi House is going into the Publix-anchored shopping center at 4765 Hodges Blvd.
The District‘s master plan gained approval from the Downtown Development Review Board this past week, according to Jax Daily Record. The project is likely still a while away from being constructed.
Two more local McDonald’s locations are getting remodels: one at 4291 Southside Blvd. and one at 14030 Hubble Dr.
Winn Dixie is shuttering pharmacies inside six of its Jacksonville stores, according to the Florida Times-Union. The locations affected are: Beach Blvd., St. Augustine Rd., Blanding Blvd., Arlington Rd., Fort Caroline Rd., and Monument Rd.
