ANN J’S JAVA JOURNAL: Southern Grounds & Co.

Guest contribution by Ann Johnson

In the small coastal community of Neptune Beach, FL, you will find Southern Grounds on the corner of Lemon and First Street.

This coffeehouse is nestled among boutiques and restaurants and has the feel and sophistication of a large city such as Chicago or Atlanta with the coziness of small-town USA.

Entering the courtyard through the pale green wrought iron fence, you see umbrellas covering several tables that shield you from the sun during the day and add ambiance at dusk. While sitting outside at one of the many tables at Southern Grounds, you can smell the fresh ocean air blowing off the Atlantic.

The character of this café continues as you step inside. In the corners are vignettes with comfortable chairs – a perfect place for reading, studying or quiet conversation while sipping from the many offerings of lattes, pour-overs or a glass of wine. The tables and chairs are cool retro-chic.

The long white bar with comfortable stools is perfect to join a friend for coffee and a quick bite or to make a new friend from the patrons ranging from millennials to seniors – professionals, students, tourists and retirees.

The avocado toast or grits in a bowl are hearty choices for starting your day. Try the hummus plate for brunch, and the turkey club or fresh salad for a healthy and enjoyable lunch. The food choices are both healthy and delicious. The large menu has something for everyone ranging from magnificent desserts to cheese trays.

When you are in the mood for coffee in a coastal, quiet atmosphere, look no farther than 200 S. 1st Street in Neptune Beach where you will find Southern Grounds.

Stop in once and you will want to return again and again.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Southern Grounds is also in the process of adding a second location at 1617 Atlantic Blvd. in San Marco.)
