BARNETT BANK DEVELOPMENT GETS DDRB OK

The proposed redevelopment of the old Barnett Bank building downtown has cleared a major hurdle toward becoming reality.

The project was approved this week by the Downtown Development Review Board. Once it begins construction, it’ll act as phase 1 of a larger project to completely revamp the Laura Street Trio buildings.

The historic Barnett Bank building will be converted into a mixed-use building featuring office space, 100 apartment units, retail space, and a ground-floor bank.

No word yet on when construction might begin.

The Subway location at 140 W. Monroe St. closed this week. According to Jax Daily Record, the franchise owner blamed food trucks for the restaurant’s demise. Online reviews and anecdotal evidence would suggest that they had issues long before the new food truck court opened. Either way, the space will be taken over by former landlord Dalton Agency.
