A Quick Look at the Other Cities Named Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Florida, is the largest city in the country with its name, but it’s far from the only Jacksonville in America.

There are a half-dozen cities, and around a dozen other municipalities and census-designated areas, that also bear the name Jacksonville. Most of them were named for President Andrew Jackson, a divisive historical figure for whom Florida’s Jacksonville is also named.

Here’s a brief look at the six other incorporated cities named Jacksonville with populations over 1,000.

Jacksonville, AL

Located in northeast Alabama’s Calhoun County, Jacksonville, AL, has a population of over 12,500 residents.

The city was founded in the 1830s and, like our city, was named in honor of Andrew Jackson. It’s notable for being the home of Jacksonville State University, a public university with over 8,000 students.

Jacksonville, AR

Arkansas’ Jacksonville is a suburb of Little Rock located in Pulaski County, with a population of over 28,000.

Unlike most of the other cities listed here, this Jacksonville wasn’t named for Andrew Jackson, but rather a prominent landowner who was instrumental in the city’s founding.

The city was founded in 1870 and incorporated as a city in 1941. It’s home to an Air Force base that was once used for the development of bomb components during World War II.

Jacksonville, IL

Founded in 1825, Jacksonville, IL, is believed to be named in honor of Andrew Jackson. It’s the county seat of Morgan County, with a population of just under 19,500.

The city is home to Illinois’ state deaf and blind schools as well as two private colleges: Illinois College and MacMurray College. It’s also the subject of a Sufjan Stevens song named “Jacksonville.”

Jacksonville, NC

With a population of over 70,000, Jacksonville, NC, is the most populous city on the list. It’s the county seat of Onslow County and located in southeast North Carolina.

The city was founded in 1842 and named after Andrew Jackson. It’s home to a large training facility for the US Marine Corps.

Jacksonville, OR

The smallest city on the list, Jacksonville, OR, has a population of around 2,700. It was founded during the 1850s as part of the great “gold rush” when gold deposits were found within the city’s land.

The city is named for Jackson Creek and Jackson County, in which it sits. Both are believed to be named for Andrew Jackson.

Jacksonville, TX

The eastern Texas city of Jacksonville is another one that wasn’t named for Andrew Jackson. It was instead named for two early settlers when it was first laid out in the 1850s. It sits in Cherokee County with a population of over 14,500.

The city is noted for its tomato production, as well as having been home to department store Bealls during the mid-1900s.
