Building Up Jax, 11/12: Logistics improvements, Hemming Park, and more

This week, the big story in Jax development news was logistics. We note announcements from both Amazon and UPS, as well as news about Hemming Park and other noted projects in this week’s Building Up Jax.

Logistics Upgrades

Jacksonville is starting to live up to its nickname of “America’s Logistics Center”.

Amazon.com, having already signed on to construct one massive distribution center, announced that they will also open a small delivery center in northern Jacksonville.

According to Jax Daily Record, this center will be located at 11084 Cabot Commerce Circle in the Alta Lakes Commerce Center.

Amazon is also expected to announce a second fulfillment center project in the coming weeks.

Additionally, United Parcel Service (UPS) announced this week that it plans to invest almost $200 million into its delivery center. The expansion to the center will result in a 33% increase in capacity and will allow more UPS trucks to dock for easy loading.

Hemming Park Back to the City?

The Curry administration plans to have the city regain control over Hemming Park, according to Jax Daily Record.

The park has been managed for the past couple of years by nonprofit organization Friends of Hemming Park, but the organization has come under fire recently for mismanaged expenses and lack of progress.

Nothing is imminent yet, but city officials have indicated that they hope Curry and the nonprofit’s leadership can meet soon to figure things out.

Noted projects

  • The Arc Jacksonville was granted a permit to construct a 6-unit apartment building at 6233 118th St. that will presumably be used to house adults with intellectual disabilities.
  • IKEA received a permit for its $22 million build-out on Gate Parkway.
  • A 246-unit apartment complex, The Point at Town Center, is planned at the intersection of Gate Parkway and Burnt Mill Road, according to Jax Daily Record.
