Moving and storage company U-Haul is planning an adaptive reuse project at a property it recently purchased in LaVilla.
The company announced via press release this week that it will redevelop a 91-year-old building at 141 Myrtle Ave. N. into a 231-unit self-storage facility, as part of its “corporate sustainability” initiative.
According to the press release, the structure was once home to Western Union Telegraph Company. It’s currently occupied by McGill’s Custom Counter Tops and Dukeman Custom Woodworking.
The project marks a rare instance of adaptive reuse, as opposed to new development, in historic LaVilla.
JTA received a permit to begin demolition on a now-obsolete portion of the Rosa Parks Transit Station at 201 Union St. W.
The station served as the city’s main bus terminal since 1997 before being replaced by Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center in LaVilla. Part of the station will remain operational, while the rest of the property is being cleared for future transit-oriented development.
